What Is The Right Rug Size For Your Horse
When it comes to choosing the right rug size for your horse, it's important to measure your horse accurately to ensure a good fit. Horse rugs (blankets) come in various sizes, typically measured in inches or centimeters, depending on the country. Here's how to determine the correct rug size for your horse:
1. Measure Your Horse
- Use a flexible measuring tape (such as a fabric tape measure).
- Measure from the center of the chest (where the chest meets the neck) around the widest part of the horse’s shoulder and along the body.
- Measure all the way to the end of the hindquarters, stopping just before the tail.
- Make sure the tape measure is straight along the horse's side.
The measurement in inches (or centimeters) will be the size of the rug you need. For example, if your measurement is 75 inches, you’ll need a 75" rug.
2. Standard Rug Sizes (U.S. and UK Systems)
- Horse rug sizes typically range from 57" to 87" in the U.S., and 4'6" to 7'0" in the UK.
- Sizes are usually listed in 3-inch increments (e.g., 69", 72", 75", etc.).
- In the UK, rugs are measured in feet and inches (e.g., 5'9", 6'0", 6'3").
3. Size Guide (Approximate) Based on Horse Height
- 11-13hh (Hands high): 57" to 60" rug (4'6" to 5'0")
- 13-14hh: 63" to 66" rug (5'3" to 5'6")
- 14-15hh: 69" to 72" rug (5'9" to 6'0")
- 15-16hh: 75" to 78" rug (6'3" to 6'6")
- 16-17hh: 81" rug (6'9")
- 17hh+: 84" to 87" rug (7'0")
4. Rug Fit Tips
- The rug should cover the horse’s body from the withers to the top of the tail.
- It should fit comfortably around the neck and shoulders without restricting movement or rubbing.
- Ensure it covers the sides but isn’t too long (to prevent tripping).
- A rug that is too tight will cause rubbing or sores, while one that is too loose may slip or become uncomfortable.
Always check the brand’s sizing chart, as sizing can vary slightly by manufacturer.
It can be very tricky to find the right size rug for your horse but is extremely important to ensure the comfort of your horse and to prevent rubbing and rug slippage.
