Over Reach Boots

"Over Reach Boots" (also called overreach boots or bell boots) are protective gear used on horses to prevent injuries, particularly to the front hooves. When a horse is in motion, especially at faster gaits like cantering or galloping, there’s a risk that its hind hooves might strike or "overreach" the back of the front hooves. This can cause damage, bruising, or more serious injuries like cuts to the coronary band or heel.

Features of Over Reach Boots:

  1. Shape: Bell-shaped, covering the pastern, coronet, and sometimes part of the heel.
  2. Material: Made from materials like rubber, neoprene, or synthetic leather.
  3. Fastening: Most overreach boots have Velcro straps, making them easy to apply and adjust. Some pull-on versions offer a snug fit but can be more difficult to put on.
  4. Cushioning: Some boots have added padding around the heel area for extra protection.

Benefits:

  • Prevent injuries: They protect against overreaching injuries to the front hooves caused by the hind hooves.
  • Shock absorption: They help reduce the impact and risk of injury if the horse overreaches.
  • Durability: Overreach boots are designed to be hard-wearing to withstand the rigors of training and competition.

Use in Disciplines:

Overreach boots are commonly used across various equestrian disciplines, such as:

  • Show jumping
  • Cross-country
  • Dressage
  • Racing
  • Eventing

They are especially important for horses that have a tendency to overreach or those that participate in fast-paced or high-impact activities.
