Numnahs

A numnah is a type of saddle pad, primarily used in English riding disciplines. It’s shaped to fit the contours of the saddle and the horse's back, providing comfort, protection, and a more polished look. The term "numnah" is often used interchangeably with "saddle pad," especially in British English, though a numnah typically refers to a more specifically contoured pad that covers the horse's back more fully than some other types of pads.

Key Characteristics of Numnahs:

  1. Shape:

    • Numnahs are cut to fit the shape of the saddle, offering more coverage than half pads but still less bulk than a traditional square saddle pad.
    • They are contoured to follow the lines of the saddle, with precise shaping around the saddle flaps and pommel. This gives them a sleek and tidy appearance when fitted under the saddle.
  2. Size and Fit:

    • Numnahs come in various sizes to suit different types of saddles, including jumping, dressage, and all-purpose saddles. They provide more coverage than a half pad but often less than a square or rectangular all-purpose pad.
    • Some are designed with high-withered horses in mind, featuring extra room around the withers to prevent pressure or rubbing.
  3. Materials:

    • Sheepskin or Wool Numnahs: These are popular for their ability to provide comfort, moisture control, and temperature regulation. The natural fibers of sheepskin or wool wick away sweat and offer cushioning to relieve pressure points.
    • Synthetic Fleece: More affordable than natural materials, synthetic fleece numnahs offer softness and comfort while being easier to care for.
    • Cotton: Lightweight and breathable, cotton numnahs are great for everyday use. They are typically quilted for added padding and come in a wide range of colors.
    • Neoprene: Some modern numnahs use neoprene for its non-slip properties and shock absorption, especially useful for jumping or cross-country riding.
  4. Purpose:

    • Comfort: Numnahs cushion the saddle and evenly distribute the rider’s weight to prevent pressure points on the horse’s back.
    • Protection: They help protect the horse from rubbing or chafing caused by the saddle and also shield the saddle from sweat and dirt.
    • Improved Fit: Like other saddle pads, numnahs can slightly adjust saddle fit, though they are usually thinner than corrective or half pads. Some may have pockets for inserts or shims for minor saddle fit adjustments.
    • Aesthetic Appeal: Numnahs give a neat and traditional look, which is particularly favored in the show ring, especially in dressage or hunter classes.
  5. Types of Numnahs:

    • Standard Numnah: Designed to be used with general-purpose or jumping saddles, offering lightweight protection and comfort.
    • Dressage Numnah: Longer and straighter to match the length of a dressage saddle, providing more coverage for the rider’s leg and a polished look in dressage competitions.
    • High-Wither Numnah: Specially designed for horses with high withers, featuring extra space and contouring around the withers to prevent pressure and ensure a good fit.
    • Sheepskin Numnah: Highly popular for sensitive horses or long rides, these numnahs are made from natural sheepskin to offer superior cushioning, moisture-wicking, and comfort.

Benefits of Using a Numnah:

  1. Comfort for the Horse: Numnahs provide a cushioned layer between the saddle and the horse’s back, reducing friction and pressure, particularly for horses that are ridden frequently.

  2. Protects the Saddle: By absorbing sweat and dirt, a numnah keeps the saddle cleaner and helps prolong its lifespan. This is especially important with expensive leather saddles.

  3. Temperature and Moisture Regulation: Numnahs made from natural fibers, like sheepskin or wool, can help regulate temperature by wicking moisture away from the horse’s back, keeping the horse cooler and more comfortable during long or intense rides.

  4. Traditional Appearance: Many riders prefer the sleek, contoured look of a numnah over bulkier square pads, particularly in formal riding disciplines like dressage or showing.

  5. Prevents Saddle Slippage: Certain materials, like sheepskin and neoprene, can help prevent the saddle from slipping, keeping it securely in place during riding.

Differences Between Numnahs and Saddle Pads:

  • Shape: A key difference is that numnahs are generally shaped to fit more precisely under the saddle, while square or rectangular saddle pads offer more coverage, extending beyond the saddle flaps.
  • Discipline Use: Numnahs are often seen in more traditional or formal disciplines like dressage and showing, where a tidy, polished appearance is important. Square pads are more common in eventing, jumping, and everyday riding.

When to Use a Numnah:

  • Showing: Numnahs are popular in dressage, show jumping, and hunter classes due to their clean appearance.
  • Horses with High Withers: High-wither numnahs are specifically designed to accommodate horses with pronounced withers.
  • Sensitive Horses: Sheepskin or wool numnahs are great for horses with sensitive skin or backs, offering soft, natural cushioning that prevents sores or rubs.
  • Riding in Hot Weather: Wool or sheepskin numnahs can help wick away moisture and keep the horse cool, making them ideal for hot climates or long riding sessions.
