Horse Events In Devon

Here are some handy tips for those competing or if you are just going along to spectate.

Warm-up etiquette as a rider preparing to compete, or as a spectator watching the warm-up areas?

If you're a rider warming up at a horse event

Horse Event Arena Etiquette

  • Always ask permission before entering a warm-up ring, even if it appears empty
  • Pass left shoulder to left shoulder when meeting oncoming traffic
  • Faster gaits have right of way - walk for trotting horses, trot for cantering horses
  • Call out your intentions clearly: "passing on your left" or "coming through"
  • Don't follow too closely behind other horses, especially if yours kicks

Jumps and Equipment At Horse Events

  • Ask before adjusting jump heights or moving equipment
  • Share jumps fairly - don't monopolize obstacles
  • If someone is having a lesson or working through a problem, give them space
  • Pick up any rails you knock down promptly

General Courtesy Whilst Competing At A Horse Event

  • Keep warming up sessions focused and efficient
  • Be aware of your horse's behavior around others
  • If your horse is aggressive or unpredictable, warn others and maintain distance
  • Don't coach other riders unless asked
  • Keep conversations brief if the arena is crowded

What To Do As A Spectator At A Horse Event

  • Stay in designated viewing areas away from warm-up rings
  • Keep noise levels down as horses can be startled
  • Don't feed or pet horses without explicit permission
  • Avoid flash photography near warming-up horses

Safety At Horse Events

Safety First Whilst At Horse Events

  • Always wear proper safety equipment (helmet minimum)
  • Be predictable in your movements and communicate clearly
  • If you need to stop suddenly, move to the center or edge of the arena
  • Watch for horses and riders who might be having difficulties
