Warm-up etiquette as a rider preparing to compete, or as a spectator watching the warm-up areas?
If you're a rider warming up at a horse event
Horse Event Arena Etiquette
- Always ask permission before entering a warm-up ring, even if it appears empty
- Pass left shoulder to left shoulder when meeting oncoming traffic
- Faster gaits have right of way - walk for trotting horses, trot for cantering horses
- Call out your intentions clearly: "passing on your left" or "coming through"
- Don't follow too closely behind other horses, especially if yours kicks
Jumps and Equipment At Horse Events
- Ask before adjusting jump heights or moving equipment
- Share jumps fairly - don't monopolize obstacles
- If someone is having a lesson or working through a problem, give them space
- Pick up any rails you knock down promptly
General Courtesy Whilst Competing At A Horse Event
- Keep warming up sessions focused and efficient
- Be aware of your horse's behavior around others
- If your horse is aggressive or unpredictable, warn others and maintain distance
- Don't coach other riders unless asked
- Keep conversations brief if the arena is crowded
What To Do As A Spectator At A Horse Event
- Stay in designated viewing areas away from warm-up rings
- Keep noise levels down as horses can be startled
- Don't feed or pet horses without explicit permission
- Avoid flash photography near warming-up horses

- Always wear proper safety equipment (helmet minimum)
- Be predictable in your movements and communicate clearly
- If you need to stop suddenly, move to the center or edge of the arena
- Watch for horses and riders who might be having difficulties
