Horse Grooming – Frequently Asked Questions

What grooming brushes do I need for my horse?

For daily use, you'll need a dandy brush for removing mud, a body brush for finer dust, and a mane & tail comb. A rubber curry comb is also helpful for loosening hair and promoting circulation.

How often should I groom my horse?

Ideally, horses should be groomed daily to maintain skin health, check for injuries, and strengthen the bond between horse and rider. At minimum, groom before and after every ride.

What’s the best detangler for manes and tails?

Popular choices include Cowboy Magic Detangler, NAF Silky Mane & Tail, and Absorbine Showsheen. These help prevent breakage and make combing easier.

Do I need different shampoos for different coat colours?

Yes—colour-enhancing shampoos are available for greys, bays, blacks, and chestnuts. They help brighten the coat and enhance natural tones for show-ready results.

What products help with mud fever?

Look for barrier creams and shampoos from trusted brands like Dermoline or NAF Mud Guard. Keeping legs clean and dry is also essential.

When should I clip my horse?

Horses are typically clipped in autumn and winter to reduce sweating during work. Use clippers suited to your horse’s coat type, and consider a pre-clip wash to clean the coat for better results.
